Introduction

The process of getting a license depends on where in Canada you live. Here’s a snapshot of how each province handles it.

By Province:

  1. Ontario

    • 3-step system: G1 (written), G2 (first road test), G (final test).

  2. British Columbia

    • Graduated system: L (learners) → N (novice) → Class 5 (full).

  3. Quebec

    • Involves mandatory driving school, then testing via the SAAQ.

  4. Alberta

    • Class 7 (learner), Class 5-GDL (probationary), then full Class 5.

  5. Other Provinces

    • Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia, and others have similar tiered programs.
